Gorges of La Vera

The Vera region is located in the northwestern corner of Cáceres, between the Gredos massif and the Tiétar River.

Nature wanted to draw itself capriciously with the invaluable help of water.

A river and 1,423 streams shape countless gorges, pools, and natural pools. Some of these gorges are worth visiting for their stunning scenery, while others also have swimming areas and beach bars.

THE LAKE
Jaraíz de la Vera

The most notable attraction outside the urban area of Jaraíz is the famous natural pool known as El Lago. Crystal-clear waters, a fine sandy beach, and lush greenery make this a popular spot.

This pool was built on the banks of the Pedro Chate Gorge, and over the years, tourism initiatives have added a bar-restaurant-terrace, showers, changing rooms, restrooms, a picnic area, and children's games.

It is located 2.5 km from Jaraíz de la Vera towards the Cuacos de Yuste road

LAS TABLAS

The boardwalks are located 500 meters from the lake. It's a good idea to walk along the lush, vegetation-filled path that connects these two spots.

At Las Tablas you can enjoy a dreamlike setting, surrounded by trees and a pond for swimming.

This spot invites you to relax, with a peaceful silence broken only by the sound of water running through its gorge. In this same pool, there is a restored mill, now operating as a bar-restaurant, a testament to one of the area's ancient trades. A stroll along the lush, vegetation-filled path that connects these two spots is highly recommended.

THE PILATILLAS

The Pilatillas are a group of natural pools in which natural cavities have been formed by river erosion and are made up of three natural pools called:

  • Pilatillas de Arriba,

  • Charco del Calderón (named after the beautiful Calderón waterfall) and the

  • Pilatillas from Below.

It is located in the town of Garganta La Olla and is accessed in the direction of Cuacos de Yuste via the CCV-913 regional road.

This natural gorge leaves small pools where you can swim and enjoy the idyllic scenery. The Pilatillas below is the largest pool, and if you want to swim, this is the most ideal, as in summer it is dammed, filling with water and forming a truly natural pool.

This gorge also has a beach bar nestled in the landscape.

LAS PILAS

This is a pond located in the town of Collado de la Vera. Take the CC-89 highway out of Jaraíz de la Vera and, after passing this small town, you'll reach the pond 5 km away.

This is a natural pool formed by the waters of the gorge, with areas of varying depths, making it suitable for both children and adults. The site also has a snack bar offering food and drinks, as well as restroom facilities and parking.

It's important to note that, although "Las Pilas" is a place of great beauty and tourist appeal, its space is not very large, so it's recommended to visit on weekdays or early in the morning to avoid crowds and ensure a more pleasant experience.

In short, the Pedro Chate Gorge and, in particular, "Las Pilas" in Collado de la Vera, offer a unique experience for those seeking to enjoy nature, swimming in fresh waters, and the tranquility of a well-preserved natural environment.

GARGANTA
JARANDA

Located in Jarandilla de la Vera, it stands out for having a multitude of pools and pools of crystal-clear water, such as Charco El Trabuquete (famous for its waterfall and depth), Los Frailes, La Serraílla or La Puente Parral.
It is also marked by various bridges that allow its passage.
Nestled in a privileged spot where we can even see, with luck, mountain goats.

CHARCO DEL TRABUQUETE

Charco del Trabuquete is one of the most beautiful and popular natural pools in the Vera Valley.

The fact that you have to walk about 3 km to reach the pool, starting from El Guijo de Santa Bárbara, means that it is not as crowded as other pools in the area.

Located in the charming and quiet village of Guijo de Santa Bárbara, Charco del Trabuquete is a simple route, although somewhat demanding due to its 553m elevation gain.

It runs through the Jaranda Gorge. A route dotted with cliffs and precipices through which streams and crystal-clear river gorges glide. It is undoubtedly a natural setting of great beauty nestled between the Sierra de Gredos and the Sierra de Tormantos.

GARGANTA
DE CUARTOS

Past Losar de la Vera and heading toward Madrigal de la Vera, 3 kilometers away, we find the medieval Cuartos Bridge, beneath which lies a natural pool with deep, crystal-clear waters. This is one of the valley's most powerful gorges, receiving its water from streams and waterfalls such as the Matamoros, Caballerías, Largarejo, La Hoz, and Vadillo streams.

It is part of the Natura 2000 Network. In its waterways, it is easy to observe species such as the dipper, the white wagtail, the cistern bunting, and the common nightingale along many sections of the gorge.

This gorge has several beach bars where you can eat.

GARGANTA
LA DESESPERA

It is located between the towns of Piornal and Arroyomolinos de la Vera, and near Pasarón de la Vera.

Don't be fooled by its name. It hides a legend of heartbreak and disappointment that ended in one of the most beautiful spots in northern Extremadura.

Strategically located on the road from Pasarón to Piornal, between La Vera and El Jerte, any canyoning or hiking enthusiast counts it among their favorite spots.

LA CASCADA
DEL DIABLO

Located within the Gualtamino gorge, in the municipality of Villanueva de la Vera, towards Madrigal.

To get there, we'll park our car in a designated area on the right next to the EX-203 road and we'll find it about 700 m further on.

Devil's Falls is about 30 meters long and reaches 70 meters high, creating a spectacular view.

The water flows between large rocks and lush vegetation grows along its banks, creating a perfect environment for a pleasant day at any time of year.
